Popular sovereignty is an idea that government
should be formed according to the people. This
principle states that all power originates from
the people. The people elect representatives to
express their opinions.

Republicanism is the belief that our
government should be established with
the approval of the people. They should
also voice their beliefs by voting for the
their representatives.

Federalism is the system of government that
separates the central government and the
state governments.

This division of
power creates a wall
so that neither level
can interfere with
each other.

Separation of powers is the idea that
the government should be divided
into 3 branches, the Legislative, the
Executive, and the Judicial. This splits
the power into 3 and no branch can
become more powerful.

In order to maintain balance in our government, the
Constitution sets up a system of checks and balances to
limit each branch of government.

Each branch has a
way to check on one
another. Because of
this, each branch has
equal power and
cannot dominate the
other.

This principle of government prevents the
abuse of power and states that all American
citizens must obey the law. No one can bend
laws for their own interests.

Individual rights are
freedoms that the Bill of
Rights guarantees. The
government cannot take
any of these rights away
from us. These rights
protect us from the
government.

These principles affect me by creating a
guideline of how the government
system works and functions. I also
know my rights and as a citizen and
more about the Constitution.
