A simple way to think about literary theory is that these concepts serve as diverse glasses through which critics see and discuss art, literature, and even civilization. These many lenses enable critics to evaluate works of art depending on particular assumptions within that school of thought. The many lenses also allow reviewers to focus on certain features of a work that they believe are essential.
What Is Literary

A Comedy's Patterns
In a comedy, the main character, or protagonist, begins in an unfavourable state and ends up in a desirable position at the end of the story. While some comedies are amusing, they are not always. According to the Tucson Unified School District, comedies centre on a society or social group. The protagonist is prevented from reaching a goal by society, therefore the character confronts the society, and the society transforms. Alternatively, the protagonist may fall in love against the wishes of family or friends, or he may violate an unreasonable law. The Brothers Grimm's "Cinderella" story is an example of a comedy.

Literature's Tragedy
A comedy is the polar opposite of a tragedy. In literature, the protagonist begins in a desirable state but ends up in an unpleasant state. According to the Tucson Unified School District, tragedy generally takes the shape of the protagonist's isolation rather than the antagonist's betrayal. In a tragic story, a wicked deed or accident inspires vengeance, and the aggrieved character pursues retribution. In the end, vengeance just leads to greater devastation. While the reader sees other possibilities for the protagonist, the hero only considers the one that ends in disaster.
