Introduction

        When the Internet was first invented in the 

1950s, Robert E Khan and Vint Cerf, knew that it 

was going to have an impact on the world. 

However, they did not imagine how much it would 

later affect us, in almost every aspect of our lives. 

The internet has affected business, education, 

human relations, communication and politics. 

Throughout this book you will see how drastically 

the Internet has affected us and the benefits (and 

costs) of using it to run our lives.

Business

      Business is an area which has been 

severely, and mainly positively, affected by the 

Internet. In general, business has become 

much faster and efficient. It is now more 

organized as all information is stored on a 

computer and business transactions are safer 

than they used to be as they are now 

supervised by computer programs. 

Business and technology- benefits

The progress that has occurred in business because 

of the Internet and technology has been massive. 

One of the main changes has been globalization. 

Globalization is the growth of something on a 

worldwide scale. The Internet has allowed companies 

to be known by a larger amount of people. About 

2.769 billion people have access to the Internet. 

Which means that, through the Internet, companies 

can quickly become more global. The Internet has 

increased the rate of globalization.

Another way that the Internet has positively influenced 

business is how much faster transactions can now occur. 

With the help of computers, any business transactions 

can occur at much faster rates. From buying company 

shares in the stock market, to ordering a device off 

amazon, most transactions can be done through the 

click of a button. As computers can process information 

much faster then humans can, the transactions occur 

faster and more smoothly.   However, as these 

transactions are happening faster, there are more 

changes in the company, in a shorter period of time. 

With all these changes, it is necessary to be up to date 

on what is going on in all companies. Without the 

Internet it would be impossible to find all the 

information needed fast enough. But with on-line news 

available almost immediately after any change, 

companies and investors can be up to date on 

everything going on allowing them to make better 

decisions, and allowing the business world to flow faster. 

In Sao Paulo, for example, in the local stock trade 

market (BOVESPA) they have huge panels with the 

current news so that investors can know everything 

going on with their companies. To sum it up, technology 

has allowed business to happen faster and more 

smoothly. 

Finally, transactions have become safer due to 

technology. With computers supervising every

transaction, the risk of human error is significantly 

smaller and business is safer.

Business and technology - Risks

           Although technology and the Internet has 

brought many benefits to business, there are some risks 

that it has brought to the business world. First and 

foremost, with everything moving so quickly and so 

many fast changes, the technology has become needed, 

and in the event of any sort of power-out, companies 

could be seriously harmed and the stock market could 

be seriously shook up. However, big companies and 

stock markets tend to have backup generators to 

prevent this type of accident, so the size of this risk is 

minimized.

Another risk of the business world relying heavily on 

technology, is the risk of companies, or trading markets, 

getting hacked and losing large amounts of money, as 

has happened before when, for example, Sony was 

hacked in April 2011. This is a serious issue when using 

technology and the Internet for business, but, given all 

the other benefits of using technology for business, it is 

a risk that must be taken.

The final most important negative impact of the Internet 

on business, is how public opinion can severely affect 

the market value of any company. For example, if there 

is negative talk on social media pages about a certain 

company, they are bound to lose possible future

customers, who are aware of the negativity around the 

company. On the other hand, however, if public opinion 

of a company is positive, then more clients will be 

attracted to it and its market value (how much it costs) 

will go up.

Education and technology

              Education is another aspect that technology 

has really influenced. In general, education has 

improved with technology. It has become much more 

effective, and accessing information has become much 

easier as well. Also, storing work has become more 

organized, communicating with teachers and peers has 

become easier and personalized learning, for students 

who learn through different types of media has been 

enhanced.

Education and technology- benefits

              There have been many positive outcomes 

from using technology to improve education. For 

example, information is now much more accessible then 

it was before. With news published on the internet 

almost immediately after things happen, information 

can be found with much more ease then when the 

information had to be processed and then printed and 

then found by the students. Using simple internet tags, 

pupils now have endless information at their fingertips 

and learning has become more effective. 

          Another benefit, and perhaps not such an 

important one, is that work can be stored with much 

more ease meaning where physical work would be lost; 

with technology, students could access their work 

from any device with access to the internet. Also, in 

regard to storing work, with technology it takes up 

much less physical space and is therefore more 

organized. This allows students to review their work 

with more facility and enhance their learning through 

this. 

In addition to this, communicating both with teachers 

and with other students has become significantly easier. 

If, for example, a pupil has trouble understanding 

homework, all they have to do is send an email to the 

teacher with their doubt instead of waiting for the next 

day to actually talk to the teacher and explain why the 

homework was not handed in. Also, group work would 

become more effective and pupils could learn how to

work in a team; a skill valuable for life.

Enhanced personalized learning is another benefit of 

having technology in education. Children learn in 

different ways and the internet provides different types 

of medias through which a child can learn. For 

example, if a child learns a certain subject better by 

watching someone else do it, then he can watch 

tutorial videos on-line. If a child is more musical, then 

he/she can learn through interactive raps or songs 

(such as Mr Lee's crust and mantle song, or Mr 

Burchall's internet rap). The Internet allows for children 

to learn at their own preffered style, and it allows for 

them to get the most out of their learning experience.
