PROJECT SUMMARY
Learners will work cooperatively to determine
whether or not they agree with this bit of weather
lore: “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a
lamb.” Learners will communicate their findings
through the creation of a book using StoryJumper.

SOUTH DAKOTA CONTENT STANDARDS
ELA Standard 1.W.1: Write opinion pieces in which they
introduce the topic or name the book they are writing
about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion,
and provide some sense of closure.
Earth/Space Science Indicator 1: Analyze the various
structures and processes of the Earth system.
Nature of Science Indicator 2: Apply the skills
necessary to conduct scientific investigations.

ISTE NETS STANDARDS
1.d. Students identify trends and forecast
possibilities.
2.d. Students contribute to project teams to produce
original works or solve problems.
3.d. Students process data and report results.

be grouped?

Learners will be grouped in triads according to
their AIMSweb benchmark scores. Learners
who receive similar scores will work together.
This will be done to ensure that all learners are
provided with an equal opportunity to contribute
to a group’s success. It will also allow for
differentiation in terms of product.

have created by the
end of this project?

As a culminating activity, learners will create an
online storybook summarizing their findings and
stating whether or not they agree with the
proverb. All storybooks must have a minimum of
three pages. The first page will state the proverb
and what this proverb means. The second page
should include a digital picture of the group’s line
graph and a statement summarizing their recorded
data. The third page must include a statement of
agreement or disagreement with the proverb as
well as a justification of this belief.

MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY USED
• In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb by Marion Dane Bauer
• Computers
• KSFY Weather Website
http://www.ksfy.com/weather
• Graph paper
• Pencils and fine-tipped markers
• Rulers
• Digital camera or cell phone for taking pictures
• Lined paper for sloppy copies (drafts)
• StoryJumper Website http://www.storyjumper.com/

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Learners will understand what it means to make a
prediction. They will use a digital resource to collect
data (daily noon temperatures) and will represent this
data in a line graph. Learners will evaluate, analyze, and
synthesize this data to construct an opinion. Learners
will use technology to create an original work that
reports the results of their investigation and states
their opinion.

Activities
At the end of February, the teacher will read aloud to students
the book In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb by Marion Dane Bauer.
Following the reading, students will be placed in triads to discuss
their reactions to the story and predict whether or not this March
will follow the proverb.
On the first Monday in March, the teacher will use the
Promethean board to model how to go to the KSFY website, check
the noon temperature, and record this temperature. The KSFY
website will be bookmarked on all classroom computers.

Continued
Students will then be shown how to access this same website
on the classroom computers and will have an opportunity to
record the day’s temperature.
Using graph paper, a pencil, and a fine-tipped marker, the
teacher will model how to create a line graph and record the
day’s temperature on the graph. Each group will then have an
opportunity to create its own graph.
