Scott had been held in slavery in
Missouri and then taken to the free territory of Wisconsin, where he lived for two years before returning to Missouri. The Court ruled that no African American could be a citizen and that Dred Scott was still a slave. The court also ruled that the Missouri Compromise of 1820 was unconstitutional.

is for Emancipation Proclamation

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st, during the third year of the civil war. The proclamation declared that all people held as slaves within the confederate states are free.

Douglass was a well-known abolitionist. Douglass was a consultant to President Abraham Lincoln and helped convince him that slaves should serve in the Union forces and that the abolition of slavery should be a goal of the war.

Lincoln rallied to Americans
the idea that all men are created equal. He said that the way would bring a new birth of freedom and advanced democracy in America and all over the world. He said this speech at the place the Battle of Gettysburg occurred.

is for the Inaugural Address of Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address was delivered on Monday, March 4, 1861. In his address he wanted the South, who was defeated, to be treated benevolently. He took a firm stance against secession.

is for Jefferson Davis

Jefferson Davis served as the president of the Confederate States. Jefferson Davis was adamant about independence for the Confederacy. He was a Southern Democrat and a war hero from the Mexican-American war.

The Confederates hoped for European Intervention in order to help them against the Union army. They thought that they could use their cotton-based economy as leverage, but the Europeans found other ways of obtaining cotton and did not help the confederates.

Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th president of the United States, primarily during the civil war. He built the Republican party and rallied many for the Union's cause of fighting against secession. He is known for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation and freeing many slaves, and for setting the stage for future equality.

The idea of Manifest Destiny and the expansion of the United States West, it created the issue of slavery. As with new states being added, there was discussion on if slavery should be permitted. This caused an increase in sectionalism and contributed greatly to the civil war.

Thomas Nast was an American cartoonist who created political cartoons to expose corruption in the government, as well as show the aftermath of the civil war through his art. He voiced the opinions of different Americans and defined the use of political cartoons to come.

John O'Sullivan promoted the idea that settlers have a right to territorial conquest. He expressed the phrase "Manifest Destiny" which spread rapidly. He wanted America to take over the continent and spread ideas of nationalism throughout.

The Pacific Railway Act authorized the building of a transcontinental railroad over a northern route in order to link the economies of California and the Western territories with the Eastern states. This further encouraged expansion and opportunity.
