Her accomplishments include the invention of a new device and technique for the treatment of cataracts and an appointment as a faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in 1983.

She is the first African American woman to complete a residency in ophthalmology and receive a medical patent[4]. Patricia invented the Laserphaco cataract probe in 1986.

In 1973, Patricia Bath became the first African American woman to complete a residency in ophthalmology[11][7]. The following year, she moved to California to work as an assistant professor of surgery at Charles R. Drew University and also at UCLA.

In 1975, Bath became the first female faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.

In 1976, Bath co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, which established that "Sight is a basic human right"[11]. By 1983, Bath had helped create the UCLA resident ophthalmology training program, which she also directed, and was the first woman in the country to hold such a post.
