Once upon a time proprietors decided
they wanted to set up trading and
fishing posts, so they traveled to the
New World in hopes of becoming a
successful trading center one day.

Later came along the separatists in
1620, and they were very angry at the
Church of England, so they decided to
come to America for Religious freedom.
In 1630 the same people, called puritans
decided they had enough of England too,
and joined their buddies in America.

The Mayflower compact was written by
pilgrims (puritans) and the workers upon
the Mayflower ship. This treaty sets the
formation of their government. It reflects
pilgrim values because it states in the
compact that the colony was created for
the glory of God and the advancement of
the christian faith. They had decided to
come together to form a government, since
they didn't end up in where they expected
to be.

The salem witch trials was when a few
teenage girls, who lived in a puritan
community, accused innocent people of
being witches. At this time people thought
witches were real and were sent from the
devil to cause all the people's problems.
The puritans feared witches and witch
craft, accusing people who didn't fit in,
talks to animals, and didn't follow the rules
to be witches.

City Upon a Hill was a famous sermon
spoken by John Winthrop. He was
encouraging the puritans to come
together, so that everyone will want to
be like the puritans. "City Upon the Hill"
means to be a good example because
they are the leaders, that everyone is
watching.

Roger Williams was a puritan that was
kicked out of Massachusetts, for
believing in the separation of church
and state. After being kicked out, he
decided to found his own colony, for
religious freedom.

Thomas Hooker was also kicked out of
Massachusetts, but for believing all men
could vote, regardless of any religious or
property qualification. He took this as a
chance to seek more land during the Great
Migration. Once Hooker founded Connecticut,
he created the Fundamental Orders of
Connecticut. This was the first written
constitution in America, stating that all men
could vote regardless of church or money.

New England's government was
significant to today's government in the
U.S, setting the structure of how our
government is built. New England had a
direct democracy,and met at Town-Hall
meetings to take votes in business that
affected the community.

New England's economy consisted of
subsistence farming, when a family
would only farm enough food to provide
for their family.Trade was also a big
part of their economy and they
participated in the Atlantic Trade. The
New England colonies were very
wealthy.
