Thank you, Dr. Galanti, for showing that women can succeed in STEM, and for being a mentor to future teachers, engineers, and women everywhere.
Who is Dr. Terrie Galanti? Dr. Galanti is an engineer, teacher, professor, and veteran. She is someone who wants to help make learning science, engineering, and math better for students. She is someone who wants to help teachers and students learn to code. Dr. Galanti has done amazing things to help make the world a better and safer place.

When Dr. Galanti was in high school, she had a meeting with her counselor. She told her counselor that she wanted to be a math teacher. Her counselor told Dr. Galanti that she could be more than a math teacher. She could be an engineer. This got Dr. Galanti thinking. What did she want to do after high school?
Dr. Galanti listened to her counselor and decided that she wanted to study engineering after high school. She only had to figure out where she wanted to go to college. Dr. Galanti knew that she also wanted to serve her country in the military. After attending a college fair, she chose to go to the United States Air Force Academy.

Dr. Galanti graduated high school at the top of her class when she was only 17 years old. Then, she went to Colorado for the United States Air Force Academy. When she got there, she decided to study electrical engineering. Electrical engineers design and study systems that use different types of electricity. She chose electrical engineering because it is the hardest type of engineering, and she loves a challenge.

While in college, Dr. Galanti faced challenges. The Air Force Academy is a school that trains its students to become military officers. Dr. Galanti had to complete her classes, military training, and athletics at the same time. She had to work extremely hard to do well in all the areas of her college education.

College was hard for Dr. Galanti, but she enjoyed it. She loved her work, and she was very good at it. Her peers would ask her for help. She was able to teach them and be the teacher she wanted to be. In 1986, she was the first woman in history to graduate top of her class at the United States Air Force Academy. She beat out 956 graduating cadets to earn her top spot. She was named the Outstanding Cadet in engineering and electrical engineering.

After graduating from the Air Force Academy, Dr. Galanti decided to go back to school and get her master’s degree in electrical engineering with a focus on computers at Stanford University in California. Stanford was very different from the Air Force Academy. The students at Stanford had more engineering knowledge than Dr. Galanti because they went to engineering colleges instead of military colleges. The students were also very competitive and would even give Dr. Galanti bad ideas and wrong answers on purpose to make themselves look better.
