Once upon a time, there was a
beautiful princess named Jess who
lived in a kingdom called Lanisle,
located off the coast of Italy.
Lanisle was a small country, but very
important to Jess’s family, as it was
their home, despite the fact that they
had not always lived there.

When Jess was a little girl, her family lived in the
lovely country of Greenland, full of grassy plains
and endless rows of flowers.
Jess and her family lived in a beautiful cottage off
the coast, that experienced many rainstorms, and
an awful lack of sunshine.
Yet, this family still lived everyday to it’s fullest, and
was very happy in Greenland.

However one day, the king and queen of Lanisle,
at the time, were on a trip to see relatives, when
they were in a horse carriage accident. Jess’s
father, George, was the brother of the king, and
next in line to the throne. Therefore, Jess, her
mother and father, were forced to leave their rainy
town of Greenland and move to a land that was
always sunny and hot. This land was Lanisle.
From that day on, Jess would grow up to be a
beautiful and caring princess.

One day, about 10 years later, Jess was
combing her long, silky hair in the mirror when
she noticed how pale she was. She decided
right away to go out to her personal beach and
try to tan since she had an important ball to
attend the next day. Throwing on a bathing suit
and grabbing a towel, Jess went out to the
beach.

As Jess laid in the scorching hot and bright
sun, she started to become drowsy from
watching the soft waves of the ocean and the
bright beams of the sun. Within a few minutes,
Jess was asleep. Four hours later, she woke up
and looked down at her skin and felt the urge to
cry. Her skin was a dark shade of red!
Suddenly, Jess became worried because she
had never experienced this “abnormality” that
stung and felt hot to her touch. Plus, she was
going to look like a lobster for the ball! Jess
immediately ran inside the castle to tell her
father about her dilemma.

Once she told her father her problem, her dad
suggested she meet the Royal Skin Doctors of
the castle. Jess was puzzled. Why did she need
to see them? She just wanted to get rid of her
red skin before the ball. Yet, she did not protest,
because even though she had never experienced
this before, because she used to live in a place
where it rained a lot, she knew only the skin
doctors would have the answer to fix her
problem.

A few minutes later, the Royal Skin Doctors came
running into Jess’s royal chamber to assist Jess
in her time of misery. “What’s wrong Princess?”
they asked her.

Jess cried, “This red stuff on my skin! What is it?
It hurts!” As they looked at her skin, they giggled
and told her,”It’s sunburn, silly!” The word
“sunburn” was a foreign thing to Jessica. They
explained to Jess,”Sunburn is a type of 1st
degree burn that only damages your epidermis. It
is typically followed with mild swelling and
discomfort.” Jess gave a confused look and
said,”Epidermis?” They then began to explain to
her what the epidermis was. “The epidermis is
the outermost layer of our skin. It is avascular,
meaning it has no blood supply.”

Jess still didn’t understand. “My skin is
layered?”
“Yes,” said a Royal Skin Doctor, “The skin
is made of two layers: the dermis and
epidermis. The dermis is the lower layer
and it is vascularized, which means there
is a blood supply. Therefore, if you fall and
scrape your knee, you would damage the
dermis and cause it to bleed. The
epidermis is the layer right above the
dermis.”

“Is that it?” asked Jess.
“Not completely,” said another Royal Skin
Doctor. “There is also something called
the hypodermis which is not considered a
part of the skin. This is made up of fat in
the body, and stores energy in order to for
you to do your everyday activities.”

“Then where did I get this red color on my skin?”
“In the epidermis, there is something called
pigments. These are what give the skin its color.
One type of pigment is called melanin. This
pigment is important in protecting the skin from the
sun’s light. When there is not enough to protect
your skin, you will then get burned and your skin
will turn red.”

Jess fought back her tears as they
touched her burned spots. However,
once she finally understood what had
happened, she knew that she just had
to let the redness heal itself.

Sighing, Jess prepared for her
appearance at the ball, and the
Royal Skin Doctors left the castle
without further comment.

It had been almost one year since Jess
received the awful news of her sunburn
before the ball. However, now that she
knew what it was, she was not so afraid of
it. Every few days, Jess would attempt to
go out and tan, and sometimes she got
burned, depending how long she tanned,
and other times she was not affected at all.

Even though Jess’s sunburn went away
after a few days, she still kept seeing the
Royal Skin Doctors every so often. They
even became friends. Jess was very
interested in everything they had to say
about her skin, so she was always asking
them questions.

One day she asked, “Why does water leak down my
face when its hot?”
A Royal Skin Doctor replied, “Those water drops are
called sweat glands. They happen because of
something called homeostasis. That is how the body
keeps balance in different ways. For example,
temperature is apart of homeostasis. When you get
hot, the body tries to keep your temperature balanced
by causing water to leak from you which will keep you
cool. When you are cold, the body causes the little
hairs on your arms to rise in order to act in trying to
keep you warm. Those are called goose bumps.”
“Goose bumps? Wow!”

Jess was fascinated each time she asked
the skin doctor another question. She felt
like there was so much to know about her
body, and she was just getting started!
