Pete the Pirate was the captain of the most loyal crew
in the seven seas. One day, Pete heard of an enormous
ship full of gold and loot headed towards a place known
as Brazil, not to far from them, on the first day of
Summer. "Alright, crew. We've got ourselves a new
mission!"

So they set out in the last month of Spring from their
Caribbean home to ambush the ship. Pete had the most
devious plan. "We'll get there before the ship arrives,
wait at the port for a week or so, and then ambush the
ship when it gets close, takin' everything that isn't
bolted to the floors!" Pete thought to himself. "This is
too good.. I'm going to get so tan!"

Along their voyage, it only got hotter. "We're gettin'
closer to the equator, men!" Pete shouted. They
navigated by turning almost straight away from the
North Star, Polaris. Headed straight south, they
made it to Brazil record time. But something wasn't
right. It was... colder? And was that... SNOW?!?

The crew docked and Pete, infuriated and baffled, went
to the nearest person for an explanation. "What be the
meanin' of this?!" Pete shouted at the man that was
nearest to him. "What do you mean?" he said, confused.
"I mean, why is it on the 21st of June, lad!"

The man looked at Pete like he had just asked him why
aliens don't wear hats. "Because today's the Winter
Solstice?" It was Pete's turn to be confused. "What!? We
left but a month ago, on May 21st! It's supposed to be
the first day of summer!"

Realization dawned on the man's face. "Where might
you be from, sir?" Pete looked angry. "I'm from the
Caribbean. Why does it matter?" Pete snapped. "Sir, you
may want to sit down. This is going to take a while."

"SLOW DOWN!!!" Pete cried, hopelessly confused.
"Sorry," the man said. "Here. I'll take you step by
step. By the end of today, you'll be an informational
pro on the seasons!"

The man took a deep breath. "The earth rotates on
the tilt of its axis, at 23.5 degrees. The axis only
points to one location throughout the year; the
North star, Polaris. So, during it's ellipse-shaped
revolution around the sun, sometimes one half, or
hemisphere, gets more sun than the other."

"This effects the temperature because the sun's rays are hitting the
hemisphere pointed towards it dead on, but the one facing away
from the sun is getting hit at an angle, giving it less heat. When
that happens, the one getting more sun is experiencing Summer.
The one pointing away from the sun is having Winter. Right now,
the North Pole is pointing more or less towards the sun, which is
why you were having Spring-going-on-Summer up in the northern
hemisphere. Down here in the southern hemisphere, however, we
are having the first day of Winter because we are facing away from
the sun."

(less sun) Summer
(more sun)
