The New England colonies were the
northernmost group of colonies in the Americas.
They included New Hampshire, Massachusetts,
Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

New England, unlike the other two groups of colonies,
had
and has terrible conditions for crops. However, all but
Vermont touch the ocean. Which means, you guessed
it...

Fishing and shipbuilding were the backbone of their
economy. it also structured their diet. Seafood was
(and still is) quite a popular food in New England.

Each colony was founded by different people, but several
were founded for the same reason. Let's start with
Massachusetts.
Massachusetts, was founded by a group of Puritans. These
Puritans came to America in search of religious freedom,
and in turn, non-Puritans were forced to practice the same
beliefs. Those not practicing the Puritan faith were
punished by being whipped and sometimes exiled. Many
of those who were thrown out ended up founding other
colonies, like Rhode Island.

Among the banished was a man named Roger Williams.
When he was cast out by the Puritans, he decided...

own colony!
After getting some land from the Natives he had lived
with, Rhode Island was born! It accepted other castaways
from Massachusetts for a long time afterwards.

Up next is Connecticut, a colony founded by and angry Puritan
minister named Thomas Hooker. Hooker was sent away for his
religious beliefs and his belief that all men should vote. He took a
group of followers and started what is now Connecticut. He later
wrote something widely known as the first Constitution; The
Fundamental Orders
of Connecticut.

And last but not least, New Hampshire. New Hampshire
was a piece of Massachusetts, until it got permission from
King Charles I to make a new colony.

I call it?

English town and add
"New". It'll be great!

When pilgrims first came over to resettle Jamestown, they were
blown off course and ended up in present day Massachusetts. They
scribbled up a document known as the Mayflower Compact. Many
historians think of it as the first constitution of America. It laid out
the rules of Plymouth, the first successful colony in the Americas.
