Elise was four years old when she discovered the monsters. Well,
I guess she technically didn’t discover them. Her brother, who
was twelve years older, was the one who told her about the
creatures that hid in her closet. Anyway, Elise was only three
months and 27 days away from turning five when she first heard
the monster that lived amongst her clothing.
She was just about to fall asleep when she heard the door creak
open. Raising her sleepy head and blinking her sleepy eyes, she
peered into the darkness. The glow-in-the-dark stars on her
ceiling were the only source of illumination, keeping the room a
dull green. She didn’t see anything there. She paused, a hint of
fear creeping up her spine, before lying back down in her bed,
closing her eyes. Then, there was a quiet thud. The trembling
began at her feet and quickly swept over her entire body.
Quivering beneath her blanket, Elise was too scared to look.

After talking herself into it, she finally moved her blanket
away from her eyes in a motion so swift you almost wouldn’t
have known it happened in the first place. Still, she saw
nothing. Then, there was a quiet thud. The trembling
began at her feet and quickly swept over her entire body.

After talking herself into it, she finally moved her blanket
away from her eyes in a motion so swift you almost wouldn’t
have known it happened in the first place. Still, she saw
nothing. Then Elise started laughing quietly to herself,
feeling rather silly that she was so scared at this particular
moment in time. She knew nothing was there. She had no
reason to even consider it! She looked and didn’t see a
thing! She laughed harder and harder.

“What’s so funny?” A voice she had never heard before asked.
Her heart seemed to stop as her roaring laughter fell to
complete silence. Perhaps she wasn’t as alone as she thought.
She didn’t say a word- she didn’t even dare to breathe. Finally,
the husky voice repeated its question: “What’s so funny?”
Elise- in a shaky, quiet voice- finally replied, “Nothing.”
The voice chuckled. Elise glanced around her room, looking for
whatever this voice could be attached to. There was no way
this voice didn’t have a body, right?
Finally, unable to stand the mystery anymore, Elise asked where
the voice was coming from.
“Oh, silly,” the voice began, still chuckling, “I’m just above your
shoulder.”
Elise looked up and to her left.
“Not there.”

She kept her head tilted slightly upward, turning it to the
right. On her white, wooden, tear-drop shaped bedpost,
there was a towering black figure. It was crouched on the
tip of this white teardrop and it waved to her. Elise felt
tears well up in her eyes. She was scared- so scared. The
figures mouth quickly went from a friendly smile to a sorry
frown as it bent over farther so its eyes met hers.
“You need not be afraid, my child.” It said, “I mean you no
harm.”
