love irregular 

plural nouns. Do 

you know why? 

Irregular plural nouns 

do not follow the rules, 

and neither do pirates!

Remember that a plural noun is a 

noun for more than one person, 

place, or thing.

We can make most nouns plural by 

adding -s or -es to the end.

Regular Plural Noun Examples:

pirate + s = pirates

ship + s = ships

eye patch + es = eye patches

Irregular plural nouns are fishy 

because they don't follow -s and -

es rules. 

We can't say "The captain lost one 

of his foots," or "The pirates 

caught fishes."

That's because the plural forms of 

foot and fish are irregular.

When nouns end in -f or -

fe, we change the f to v 

and add -es like normal.

life - lives

calf - calves

elf - elves

leaf - leaves

person - people

man - men

woman - women

child - children

cactus - cacti

mouse - mice

goose - geese

tooth - teeth

foot - feet
