As Third Graders who are U.S. citizens you have rights thanks to The
U.S.Constitution! These rights and the plan for how our government
works was signed on September 17, 1787 in Philadelphia, PA. It has 7
articles that explain there are 3 branches of Government that
balance out the power between Executive, Legislative and Judicial.
It also has Amendments that give you and all people rights called
your Bill of rights and a preamble that explains why we need a
national government. Th Preamble basically says:
The citizens of the U.S. came together to make our country the best
by being fair, peaceful and letting people feel safe by having an
army. The purpose of all this was to make sure people get to
be happy, healthy, and stay free. The people agreed to this
document.

In order for people including 3rd Graders to have a Government
that works well and to have rights they need a plan that is agreed
on. Our U.S. Constitution is that plan! It starts with the 7 articles
of the constitution which explains how our government works.
Article 1 Explains how The Legislative Branch works and how the Senate
and House of Representatives work. It also gives Congress powers to make laws.

framers. Article 2 explains the Executive Branch is headed by the President. It
explains how he, the Vice President, and other executives are chosen by
electors. The President can be in charger for 4 years and is commander and
chief of the military. The Executive branch carries out the laws and makes
new ones.

When the Constitution was adopted
in 1788, some people didn't think it
protected all of their individual
freedoms. They thought that the
Constitution should be changed or amended
to protect them. On December 15, 1791,
ten amendments were added
to the Constitution. These amendments
guarantee them their individual freedoms
and rights. They are called the
Bill of Rights.


Press, Expression, and Assembly.The 1st Amendment is the most important of the Bill of Rights!
It has five parts the Freedom of Speech, Religion, Press,
Expression, and Freedom of Assembly.

militia. The 2nd Amendment tells who can own guns or weapons.
Some people think it just means states can let people own
guns to run state militias.
