With the help of the internet, students and teachers
have access to the information of the entire world
(Bookhauser). I don't have textbooks for my math
students and am constantly searching for new
resources and ways to engage students. A lot of times
parents do not know how to help their child at home,
and they can quickly search for videos to explain a
topic. Several teachers from across my district share a
Google Drive folder to help collaborate and share
resources with each other more easily, previously
unavailable because we are not in the same building.

I worry that students and teachers both will become
too dependent on technology and digital literacy. I
shudder and panic at the thought of my "intellectual"
classroom not functioning properly during a class
period. Could a school function without internet?
Students solve basic math facts, and instinctively reach
for their calculators. I want my students to be
independent thinkers and problem solvers, that are
supported by 21st century skills.

I find that a lot of students do not know much about computer literacy
outside of a word processor. They do not know how to create
presentations or use email. When I was growing up, we had a computer
class where we learned how to use the computer, Microsoft Office, and
research. Because of funding, these classes have been cut and it is up to
the content teacher assigning the project to teach the students how to use
the program.
I have enjoyed using NearPod to present information as well as to
engage and differentiate for students. I am always searching for new
programs and apps to use. A program similar to NearPod that I am
anxious to try out is Classkick. There are a lot of different options out
there, and for a teacher that is not as tech-savy this can be
overwhelming. I would eventually love to be a technology coordinator at
a school or district to help teachers with implementing technology in the
classroom.

Moving Forward

Teachers need time and teaching on where to find the
best resources, which programs to use when, and how
to use them. This would best be done interactively
where teachers could experience using the program,
instead of having to learn how to use it on their own.
Students need to know how to research effectively,
how to be good digital citizens, and proper computer
or technology etiquette.
