The religious acts of Islam developed in the Arabian Peninsula. The followers of this religion were known as the Muslims.
2

Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, was a thriving pilgrimage center. The merchants in Mecca became wealthy with the help of pilgrims. Weapons were forbidden in the temple, making Mecca a safe and peaceful business location.
3
An Arab man, Muhammad, was born in the oasis town of Mecca around the time of A.D 570. Muhammad was honored by Muslims as the prophet of Islam and introduced Islam to Southwestern Asia.

When Muhammad was about 40 years old, the voice of the Angel Gabriel called him to be the messenger of God. Muhammad wondered how an illiterate merchant like him could become the messenger of God.

6
Even though Muhammad was frightened by this, he decided to devote his life to spreading the religion of Islam. He encouraged Arabs to worship God, or Allah, instead of pagan gods.

7
Muslims do not portray people or gods in their art, therefore there is no picture of Allah. The only picture you will find of Allah is in the art form of calligraphy.

8
At first, only a few people listened to Muhammad's teachings because they did not want to give up on their pagan gods. Because so many people threatened him, Muhammad and his people were driven out of Mecca and moved to Yathrib.

9
Yathrib was later named Medina. The people of Medina welcomed Muhammad and his teachings. They soon became the first community of Muslims.

10
Muhammad died in 632, after returning to Mecca and uniting the Arabs under the religion of Islam. Islam continued to spread and became one of the world's greatest religions.

11
The sacred text of Islam is known as the Quran, which is basically the Bible for Muslims. It states that everyone is responsible for their own decisions. But Muslims believe that Muhammad was the last and greatest prophet God sent.

12
The death of Muhammad caused confusion and turmoil among the Muslims. They feared that they would not survive without a faithful and powerful leader like him.

13
The Muslims were faced with a severe problem, they were without a leader. So who will be the next to follow in Muhammad's footsteps?
