In a small house in Istanbul, a young boy 

named Ciril sat in his living room watching  

television. His father came in and saw the 

look on his son's face.

"What is wrong, son?" his father asked. "I 

am watching the news, and I hear stories I do 

not understand." replied Ciril.

Unsure what Ciril meant, his father asked, "What do 

you not understand?"

"Well, I see all these terrible things done in the name 

of Islam, and I wonder why we continue to worship?"

His father paused for a moment, then looked 

at Ciril and said "It is true that some terrible 

things have been done in the name of Islam, 

but we must not allow those actions to define 

us."

"The influence of Islam," his father continued, 

"has also been responsible for the creation of 

extreme beauty and the search for 

knowledge."

"Yes, Muhammad was a holy man and a 

general, but Muslims are also scientists, 

artists, and builders."

"In Persia, during the Thirteenth Century, 

there lived a poet and mystic named Rumi."

"He wrote an epic poem almost twenty seven 

thousand lines long, and it is considered one of the 

greatest poems ever written, not just among 

Muslims."

"Around the same time," Ciril's father 

continued, "a scientist named Ibn al-Nafis 

came from a city called Damascus."

"He was a highly respected doctor, scholar, 

and the first person to correctly describe how 

blood travels through the body."
