"The Coahuiltecan tribe of Texas"

The fruits are a seasonal treat, but the cactus
pads could always be found and were consumed.
The Coahuiltecans were nomads.

The Coahuiltecan Tribe were nomads. They covered
large distances so they always had temporary homes. Their
diet consisted mainly of small mammals like rabbits and
desert mice, buffalo, fish, and deer. The Coahuiltecans also ate
wild plants, assorted fruits, cacti, mesquite beans, ant eggs,
spiders, and worms. Javelinas were also a main part of their diet.

The Coahuiltican Tribe could be found in
Southern Central Texas

The lives of the Coahuiltecans were affected greatly by
the South Texas environment. Their only domesticated
animal was a strange barkless dog. Except for bison,
there were very few other large animals in South Texas.
The winters where very dry and cold and the summers were
very dry and hot. The land where they lived was rocky,
covered with cactus and brush with few trees.

Their homes, called wickiups, were easy to assemble.
These small, round houses were made of thin, flexible
pieces of green wood bent to create a dome. Small
branches were wrapped around the dome to make a grid. In
cool weather, animal hide was used to cover the
frame.Sometimes a small firepit was dug in the middle of the
wickiup. Wickiups were short and squat. Since the Coahuiltecans
were nomadic, they were left behind after the tribe moved on.
