This book is dedicated to the middle school students who haven't learned about chemical reactions and their importance.

We've never heard of them.

Today we will learn about the five different chemical reactions. Can any of you name one?

The Five Chemical Reactions
-Synthesis
-Decomposition
-Single Displacement
-Double Displacement
-Combustion

Synthesis Reaction:
A synthesis reaction can be described when two or more substances combine together and form a single compound.

Any questions?

What is an example of this?
An example of a synthesis reaction that may occur in everyday life is when you're baking a cake. The multiple ingredients in the recipe mix together to create one form of batter.
A+B=AB

Decomposition Reaction:
When a compound breaks down into two or more smaller substances.

Each time you use a vacuum cleaner an ozone from the sparking brushes is created in the motor. The ozone created is destroyed by the oxygen in the air.

How can you identify a decomposition reaction?
You can identify a decomposition reaction by looking at AB = A+B. AB represents the compound which then breaks down into A and B.

Single Displacement Reaction:
A single displacement reaction is when an element reacts with a compound and takes the place of another element in that compound.

Is it true these solutions can be identified by plugging in the compounds/reactants into the general formula A + BC = AB + C?

Single Displacement Reaction:
A single displacement reaction is when an element reacts with a compound and takes the place of another element in that compound.

ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDING! Yes, that is right. You're most definitely smarter than a fifth grader.
