Edward raced to the mailbox, like he did everyday, to see if there was anything for him. He knew his grandmother was sending him a card in the mail.
Edward jumped up and down screaming with excitement. His card arrived. Inside the envelope he found a twenty dollar bill.
Edward told his mom, "I am ready to go shopping now. I really want a new toy!"
Edward's mom said, "okay, but you must remember to look at the prices. You can only buy something for less than twenty dollars because you have to add more money for taxes."
Edward looked at his mom and cried, "why do I have to pay taxes? That should only be for adults. Why do they make kids pay taxes?"

"Edward, let's go drive around town so we can see why we all have to pay taxes."
Edward and his mom got in the car to travel around town.
The first stop was to Edward's school around the corner.
Edward asked his mom, "why are we at my school? What does my school have to do with taxes?"
Edward's mom replied, "if we do not have taxes then we can not have your school. Let's get out of the car and look."
Edward's mom pointed to the road first. "Look here. Taxes pay for roads so that we can drive to go places."
"Taxes also pay for your school building and your teacher's salary," explained Edward's mom.
Edward muttered, "so taxes pay your salary too?" His mom replied, "yes dear because I am a teacher too."
Let's keep going and see what else we can find.
