As soon as World War I starts in 

1914, Tommy rushes off to join 

the British army. Because of his 

high education he is granted the 

rank of Sergeant. 

The war seems like it will go on 

forever and everyone will die. 

The two armies are fighting in 

trenches for just a few miles of 

dead baron land and nobody is 

winning.

Tommy is sent to the front lines 

and sees all the fighting 

firsthand. He knows that there 

has to be a stop to all the death.

While Tommy is fighting, a 

grenade flies over him and 

lands in the dirt. Before it 

explodes, he jumps in front of 

another solider to save his life. 

Because of this, Tommy gets hit 

in the arm by a piece of shrapnel.

After he gets better, Tommy is 

sent to the front lines all over 

again. He doesn't know what to 

do when on Christmas day, the 

Germans offer to stop fighting 

for the day. At first he thinks it 

might be a trap but later he 

realizes it is not.

Tommy took his troops over to 

celebrate with the Germans and 

all the fighting stops for the day. 

The soldiers start having a big 

party in between the trenches 

and everyone is having fun.
