Once there lived a Rooster on a little Kampong Farm.
He had brightly coloured feathers,
a long sharp beak as yellow as cheddar,
a big red comb on his head and
the most magnificent voice that gets the farmer and his family out of bed.
Every morning, he would wake the farmer, his wife and three children up with “Cock-a-doodle-doo!”
The farmer would collect the chickens' eggs, feed the pigs, and milk the cows. His wife prepared breakfast and the children went to school.
Rooster would share his food with the other chickens, chase flies away from the cow, and sing the pigs to sleep.
But he was always afraid that he would lose his voice, the most useful part of him which the farmer and the animals need.
One evening, Rooster swallowed a sharp stone while he was eating.
The next morning, he tried to crow.
He tried again and again but he couldn't even say a "Hello".
“We need to be fed,” complained the pigs.
"We wouldn't mind if we could be fed some bread."
“I need to be milked,” groaned the cow.
"I need to be milked right now!"
“We need to be let out of the coop,” whined the hens.
"It's too hot inside this pen!"
The Farmer finally woke up past noon.
"Oh no, why didn't the Rooster wake me up?
It's already the afternoon."
Puzzled, he checked on Rooster, but nothing seemed wrong.
Instead, Rooster looked healthy and strong.
The animals asked Rooster, “What happened to your voice?”
He tried to speak but couldn't make much noise.
The animals were worried.
"Oh no, what will we do,
Without his cock-a-doodle-do?"
The next morning, the animals each tried to wake the farmer up.
“Mooooo,” went the cow,
but it was not as loud as Rooster's "COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO".
“Oink oink!” snorted the pigs,
but fell right back to sleep.
“Cluck cluck!” cried the hens
but they were still stuck in their pen.
Seeing this, Rooster pecked at the window to wake the farmer up instead.
SMASH!
The Farmer woke up and he was MAD.
“YOU USELESS ROOSTER! I'LL HAVE YOU FOR DINNER!”
And with that, the Farmer left to sharpen his cleaver.
Panicking, Rooster fled and hid in the chicken coop.
