
Lizzie Johnson was labeled as the "Cattle Queen" of her time. She is well known for her amazing ability to drive cattle up and down the Chisholm Trail. Being a jack of all trades, Johnson also exceed in teaching at different institutes as well as real estate speculations. Lizzie Johnson was a very talented woman who continued to surprise everyone during her time.
Elizabeth Ellen Johnson, also know as "Lizzie", was born on May 9th, 1840 in Jefferson City, Missouri. She was the the second born of seven children.

She was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Johnson and Catharine Hyde Johnson. In the 1840s, the family packed up all seven children and headed for Texas. The family lived in Huntsville, Lockhart and Webberville resulting in the family to settle on Bear Creek in Hays County.

Growing up, all of the Johnson children attended a private school by the name of Johnson Institute. This school was founded by Lizzie Johnsons parents in 1852. Lizzie then continued her education at Chappell Hill Female College located in Washington County.

Lizzie first went back and taught at the Johnson Institute. She later went and taught at many other schools in Lockhart, Manor and Pleasant Hill area. To add to her amazing resume, she also opened her own school in a house she bought in Austin. The first floor was for her students and the second floor was where she lived.

Lizzie also worked for many different cattlemen helping with the books. She continued this as she moved from town to town. As result, just like everything Johnson did, she became very good at it. After seeing how much money came from the cattle, Lizzie began to invest in livestock and land.

Slowly but surely Johnson was able to create her own cattle brand. In 1871, Johnson was able to register her cattle brand. She then would go with the men and take her cattle to the market. Soon earning herself the nickname "Cattle Queen". Lizzie hung with the big dogs when it came to the Chisholm Trail, being the first woman to travel it independently.

Lizzie Johnson made the trip up Chisholm Trail many times. On average it would take her at least two months to get her heard of Longhorn up the trail.
