

Lyndon B. Johnson
Being put in office after President John F. Kennedy he decided to follow in his steps. Johnson was sort of a spark towards the civil rights movement. In his presidency he signed two bills and starting a program called the Great Society.
Great Society

This is what he called his new set of goals to end poverty, illiteracy, and discrimination. He put down medicare, that would help and cover hospital cost for qualifying people. Medicaid help cover health care cost and gave cash assistance.
His head start program was a summer camp that helped younger kids start learning before they started school.

Sit Ins
Sit ins were a nonviolent type of protest that involved some courage to take part in. Civil disobedience was what the participants do when they would go to white only places and refuse to leave when they were denied service.

Freedom Rides
These rides sometimes included a ticket to being arrested. African americans and whites would ride these buses together to the south to protest segregated bus terminals.

Cesar Chavez
Cesar dedicated his life to improve working conditions for farm workers and was very successful. With the help of his association called United Farm Workers he led many strikes, marches, and boycotts. Keeping his nonviolent motives he decided to start the national boycott on grapes. Much later he signed contracts with growers with the union.

Martin Luther King
The most known with the most impact is MLK bringing many changes to the civil rights movement. With his speeches and his marches he brought segregation closer to an end. His most known march was 'march on washington' and gave his speech "I have a dream" there.

Little rock nine
These students were the first blacks to attend an all white school after the plessy vs. ferguson trial. On their first day of school the were denied entry by the national guard. The President later on ordered them to escort them in instead of blocking them out. They went through counseling before classes started so they had an idea of what to expect.
Black Panthers

The black panther party was an organization founded by huey newton and bobby seale. This armed self defense group was aimed towards stopping and protecting fellow African americans from falling into police brutality.
