In 1851, an Italian man names Giuseppe Mazzini created his own society called "Young Italy". Italians became interested in living there and Italians started to see that Italy must be unified.

In 1852, an Italian named Camillo di Cavour became Prime Minister of Sardinia and just like Mazzini he wanted Italy to unite. He did everything he could to improve the economy.

Giuseppe Garibaldi and his Red Shirts rose as they used their group to fight a larger military in Sicily. They were victorious in 1860 and then controlled the entire southern part of the Italian Peninsula.
