Chapter 1 - Title
"The Ghetto of Ignorance"
This is an appropriate title because the German's invaded Sighet and set up two different ghettos, one bigger than the other. Eli and the rest of his family lived in the first ghetto, and from what they knew everything in life was still normal and fine. This was ignorant of them because the gestapo came and everyone was removed from the ghettos so they could be destroyed.
Chapter - Symbol
The symbol of a "blind eye" stands for denial. This concept shows up in chapter 1 when no one listens to Moche's story of his travels and death, so denial is an appropriate concept to tie to this character.

Chapter 1 - Quote
"Optimisn soon revived." (page 19)
Durning my freshman year of high school I had to give a big presentation in my anatomy class. It really stressed me out but I stayed positive about it and kept happy thoughts, this helped me get a good grade in he end.
Chapter 1 - Literary Device
"He was as awkward as a clown" -- Simile
(page 13)
Wiesel uses this simile to clarify that Moche the beetle was physically uncoordinated because clowns, with their big feet and big movements, are usually associated with being clumsy which is what Wiesel wanted to help the reader understand about Moche.
Chapter 3 - Literary Device
"in one ultimate moment of lucidity it seemed to me we were damned souls wandering in the half world, souls condemned to wander through space til the generations of man come to an end seeking obviation- without hope of finding it." -- imagery (page 45)
This was an intense moment in the book, and Wiesel needed to describe it as awful as he remembered seeing it himself, so he used imagery here to show intense vision of confusion and hopelessness.
Chapter 2 - Title
"The Heat before the Storm"
I chose this title for chapter 2 because this was the first time the crematories were mentioned. Even thought Madame Schateche tries to warn the people about them no one listened. Also, in a more concrete way, this is just the beginning of the story when everything in the rising action is still heating up in reference to "the heat," whereas later in the story conditions become much more harsh and troubled, referring to "the storm."
Chapter 2 - Symbol
The symbol "fire" represents the tragedy that Madame Schachte was crying about. She foreshadowed on all of the tragic and horrific things happening to people and cried to people about the fire, which we later find out was the crematories, but no one listened. The symbol of the fire is towards the fear of death and the tragic things that were happening to the Jews and other groups.

Chapter 4 - Literary Device
"He was a strong, well-built, broad-shouldered man: bull neck, thin lips, frizzled hair." (page 55)
This is an example of direct characterization. Wiesel was describing the head of his camp, because through first looks of him he looks kind of intimidating, but he later finds out that he isn't.
Chapter 2 - Literary Device
"Look! Look at it! Fire! A terrible fire!" --foreshadowing (page 34)
Foreshadowing was used here to warn the other characters if the awful events that were coming soon. Even though they ignored Madam Sacher's screams, it still let the reader have a little taste of what was coming next.
Chapter 3 - Title
The Arrival
I chose "The Arrival" for the chapter three title because it is the first chapter that they arrive at Auschwitz. This is the first concentration camp they got to and it is where their journey started so it is a big deal in the story.
Chapter 3 - Quote
"You must never loose faith, even when the sword hangs over your head." (page 40)
This quote relates to me because I am very stuck with my faith and I have been made fun of for that before, but that didn't keep me from staying true to what I believe in. This is present in the novel when even through tough times Wiesel stays true to his faith.
Chapter 4 - Title
Loosing Faith
I chose this title for chapter 4 because the camp they are at not looks empty and dead. There is not a sign of religion between the jew and everyone works like robots.
Chapter 4 - Symbol
Hebrew chants represent a symbol of friendship between Wiesel and the Czech brothers. Living in such a rough time period and condition being able to hum the tunes of the Hebrew chants gave them fun and build a good relationship between all the boys.

Chapter 5 - Title
No More Forgiveness
I chose this as the title for chapter five, because I noticed a turning point inn the way the main character was acting in this chapter. Earlier in the book he had been asking for forgiveness in the bad things he'd done, but you can see now that he gradually stops asking and starts giving up.
Chapter 5 - Symbol
The spoon and the knife really stuck out to me in this chapter and played a big role in character development. In this chapter Eli's father gave him a spoon and a knife when Eli's father was close to dying. This inheritance wad important because Eli cherished the silverware , creating the symbol of the tinsels representing a piece of his father he could always have with him.
Chapter 5 - Literary Device
"It was not the first time a false prophet had foretold us to peace-on-earth, negotiations-with-the-Red-Cross-for-our-release, or other false rumors. . . . And often we believed them. It was an injection of morphine." (page 86)
This is a metaphor describing how many rumors there were told straight to the Jews. Most of the time they were told lies and given empty promises. The metaphor is describing the ways the Jews feel towards being mistreaded.
Chapter 6 - Title
The March
I chose this as the title for chapter six, because all of the Jews are being marched in the snow and ice. If any Jew stopped running then they were shot immediately on the spot and killed.
Chapter 6 - Symbol
I see the symbol of snow in this chapter as a symbol of a more peaceful death. Many of the Jews decided to fall off into the snow for a more calm death rather than being thrown into a crematorium to be burned alive.
