Looking back at growing up in the Great Depression, the hardest time in my life.

This is me as a child with my parents.

This is the house I grew up in. It was me, my parents, and later on my cousins would move in with us as well.

This is a picture from 1927 of my father who worked for Ford on the assembly line.

My mother on the other hand was a maid for various different families.

In 1925 my family was able to buy our first car. This was a major purchase in my family's history and was my father's prized possession.

My classmates and I being photographed.

In 1927 my father was fortunate enough to get a promotion to manager at Ford and life was looking up.

Me and my neighbor and best friend Todd playing as kids. Todd and I did everything together.

I didn't know how great I had until everything changed Oct. 29th 1929 when the stock market crashed.

The stock market crash struck panic into the people of the U.S when they couldn't withdrawal their money and the economy hit rock bottom. This lead to a huge decrease in consumerism and millions of people losing their jobs.

With unemployment and poverty rates skyrocketing, nobody had the money to afford the luxury of having a maid and she became unemployed.

Luckily, although my father took a huge pay cut, he was able to retain his job and remain employed. This allowed my family to barely scrape up enough money to keep the house although my dad had to sell his car.

However, my best friend Todd was not so lucky. Both of his parents lost their jobs and they had to pack up what they had and move into Hoovervilles.

During the Great Depression, life was very tough. We had to save every penny so we ate soup, stews, and other cheap foods to survive. To make matters worse, Detroit was covered in inches of Dust in a devastating phenomena called the Dust Bowl.

FDR was elected president March 4, 1933. Although he did not immediately fix the Great Depression and didn't even claim he knew how to, he seemed to unite the country and give hope to our family.
