The nervous system is the primary system in
controlling actions of the body.

Neurons have a gene containing nucleus just as
other cells do, but neurons are very different in
other ways. There are many types of neurons,
each with different functions. Dendrites bring
information to the body of the cell while axons
remove information.

Neurotransmitters are chemicals used to carry
messages from neuron to neuron at an
extremely fast rate. They can tell the neuron
to either fire off a signal of its own, or to
remain silent.

The peripheral nervous system is composed
mostly of nerves and sensory receptors, (eyes,
ears, taste buds) which relay information to
the central nervous system.

The central nervous system contains the
brain and spinal cord. These are the organs
in charge of receiving, and processing
information from the peripheral nervous
system.

The brain is the control center of the body,
it is in charge of language, processing
information, thought, reasoning, and
keeping the body working.

The brain contains the brain stem (balance,
breathing, heartbeat), medulla (blood pressure,
reflexes, response to injury), cerebellum
(movement., balance, posture), and cerebrum (
Largest part of the brain, most neurons reside
here). Also in the brain are the Limbic system
(emotional response) , the Hypothalamus (body
temp. control) , and the Thalamus(information
transport).

Parietal Lobe-Senses, orientation, pressure,
heat, cold, reading, thinking.
Occipital Lobe- Vision
Frontal Lobe- Motor, emotional reaction,
creativity.
Temporal Lobe- Hearing, music, understanding
speech, memory for nonverbal events.

The other main system involved in
coordinating body functions. The endocrine
system, unlike the nervous system, deals with
functions that are preformed over extended
periods of time.
