This story represents the impact international trade and globalization has had on us as well as around the world. We can relate and make connections to our lives through everything that occurs in this story line. We chose to focus on both the positives and negatives and included several "fun facts" on every page that go into further depth about certain ideas. Feel free to enjoy the narration by Matt.
-Cammy and Matt :)

One day, Ruby's dad had given her a new toy and shirt for doing so good in school. Ruby, being curious, looked at the tags on each and discovered they were both from china!
"Dad! These came from China! That's across the world!" she said.
Her dad responded, "Alot of things come from across the world Ruby, in fact, most things we buy here in Canada were made somewhere else"
Ruby was shocked and confused, "Lets go to the store and i'll show you what i mean" her dad told her.
Fun Fact: A con of international trade is that sometimes the items exported to us come from poor working environments/conditions. For example, successful clothing and cosmetics brands like H&M and L'oreal have been known as a being indulged in child labor. We have to be careful on who and where we trade with.
WALMART

Ruby and her Dad showed up at Walmart.
"Ruby, did you know Walmart came from a different country as well ?"
Ruby had no idea, "Where did it come from?" she asked
"Walmart is a multinational retail cooperation that originated in the USA. Many of the products they sell are imported from around the world."
Ruby was interested and couldn't wait to go inside
Fun Fact: Walmart Canada is a foreign-owned company by the USA. Foreign owned companies lose revenue, exports are reduced, and have economic destabilization. Walmart owns stores in 27 countries. 19% of Walmarts sales come from international operations. An example of globalization.

Ruby and her father entered Walmart and walked towards the produce section.
"Look Ruby, Food is also imported from all around the world. This banana comes from South America!"
"Wow! That banana comes from far away! Does anything else come from South America?" she asked
"Canada imports the coffee that i drink in the morning as well as oils for the country"
Ruby was amazed, " Do we give South America anything?" She asked
"Yes! Canada exports things like wheat, vehicles, machinery and fertilizers" he responded

"This exchange of things happens with many countries and is called International trade. It benefits us in many ways!" Her dad said
"how so?" Ruby asked
"Well, firstly, it provides countries with a variety of products that they may not have without trade. Did you know my phone is made in China? A lot of our technology comes from Asia! It also lowers prices for many goods and helps our country economically"
Fun Fact: Exports in 2017 accounted for 30.8% of Canada's GDP. International Trade also creates more jobs through the establishment of newer industries to cater to the demands of various countries. 1.9 million Canadian jobs are related to Canada exports to the U.S. It also benefits less developed countries economically through the exportation/importation of products and materials through free trade

Ruby and her dad started to walk out of Walmart when all of a sudden a cupcake caught her eye.
"Dad! Dad! Can i please get a cupcake! pretty please!" Ruby begged.
"Ruby, did you know globalized stores like Walmart reduce domestic businesses" her dad asked
"No, what do you mean?" she asked
"Well, many people choose to purchase things from big international companies rather than local businesses like a bakery for example" her dad explained "this is one con of globalization and international trade"
"I understand! We should visit the bakery down the street more often to support them!" Ruby replied
