Lake Ülemiste is the largest of the lakes surrounding Tallinn, Estonia. Ülemiste is the main part of the Tallinn water supply system, where most of the city gets its drinking water from. The lake is fed mostly by Kurna steam and Pirita River.
In the lake there is boulder called Linda' s rock. In Estonian mythology, it is believed to be one of the boulders Linda was supposed to carry to Kalev's grave at Toompea, but which fell off her apron. She sat on the boulder and cried, this creating the lake
The legendary-mythological "Ülemiste Elder" is believed to live in the lake. If anyone should meet him, then he is believed to ask: "Is Tallinn ready yet?". If then the other person answered "yes", then he would flood the city. This, the correct answer would be: "No, there is much to be done yet".
In November 1708, the lake broke through the wall of protection and sand. The water penetrated the fortress with great force and caused a flood. But in 1758 the lake tended to dry out. Then the lake was thought to have found an underground drain somewhere and runs into the sea. Yet, this fear turned out to be unjustified, because in the following years the water started to rise again.
In 1783 and subsequent years, the water level was once again very high and the stormers were afraid of flooding. After that, the water level rose again in 1807. Sandbags were installed on the lower shores of the lake, which were able to prevent greater flooding.
