Electricity
Electricity is the flow of electrical power or charge.

Electricity travels at the speed of light - more than 186,000 miles per second!

After many people have put a lot of effort and research into the invention of electricity, most people give credit to our former president Benjamin Franklin.
Electric Charge
Protons and electrons have a property called electric charge. Electrons have a negative charge while protons have a positive electric charge.
Removing an electron produces a net positive charge; the charged atom is called a positive ion. The addition of an electron produces a net negative charge and a negative ion.

Electric Force
Electric charges interact to produce what is called an electric force.

Like charges produce a repulsive electric force as positive repels positive and negative repels negative. Unlike charges produce an attractive electric force as positive and negative charges attract each other.

Coulomb
Coulomb's Law
The size of either force (+,-) depends on the amount of charge of each object and on the distance between the objects.

A coulomb is a unit of measure that finds the quantity of a charge.
Electric Field
The charge produces a force field in the space around it. Since this force field is produced by an electric charge, it is called an electric field.

Alternating Current
An alternating current moves the electrons alternately one way, then the other. Since household electric circuits use alternating current, there is no flow of electrons from the electrical outlets through the wires.

The current changes 120 times a second in a 60 hertz alternating current!
Ampere (Amp)
The unit for current is called an ampere, or amp.

Electric Circuit
An electric circuit contains some device, such as a battery or electric generator, that acts as a source of energy as it forces charges to move out one terminal, through wires and then back to the other terminal.

The electric field moves through the circuit at nearly the speed of light!
