An Intro to Augmented Reality
7/13/2019

What is Augmented Reality (AR)?
Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with the user's environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it (Rouse, M., n.d.).

Did you know?
One of the first commercial uses of AR was the yellow first down line seen on televised football games (Rouse, M., n.d.).
Invented by Sportvision, a leader in sports broadcasting technology, the yellow line has been described as one of the most important sports broadcasting technology achievements to date. The virtual yellow line has become a staple of NFL and NCAA college football broadcasts (Clarke, G., 2015).

What does AR do?
Augmented Reality (AR) allows educators and students to do just that: unlock or create layers of digital information on top of the physical world that can be viewed through an Android or iOS device (Nesloney, T., 2013).

What do educators know?
Educators know that learning deepens, not just through reading and listening, but also through creating and interacting (Nesloney, T., 2013).

Uses:
Uses: homework (mini-lessons), book reviews, parent involvement, yearbooks, word walls, sign language flashcards, and much more (Nesloney, T., 2013).
Some popular AR products include:
1.) Elements 4D
2.) Daqri
3.) Anatomy 4D
4.) Aurasma
These allow students to engage in and create AR experiences of their own, which brings their learning to life (Nesloney, T., 2013).
Remember, profound learning occurs when students, create, share, interact, and explain (Nesloney, T. 2013).
Why would I use AR in my classroom?
1.) By unlocking the everyday world, one can dig deeper and engage learners in a new and interesting way (Brown, P., 2018).
2.) It can be as easy or complex as you want it to be.
Effective Learning: 85%- Do, 10%- Hear, and 5%- See (Studio, O., 2016).

AR Resources for the Classroom:
STAR Augmented Reality Worksheets- the worksheets come alive.
AugThat- target students falling through the cracks and aren't engaged.
Two Guys and Some iPads- simple ways to incorporate AR into the classroom.
