during the American Revolution
by working in the military and

After the war, he wrote The Articles
of Confederation and The Federalist
Papers.

Alexander Hamilton was born on January 11,
1757, in Nevis, Leewards Island (a British
colony). His mom gave him most of his education
until she died. When he moved to live with Nicholas
Cruger, he read books when he was managing the
library. To Cruger, Hamilton was unusually smart.
When he moved to the Colonies (1774), he studied at
King's Collage, today known as Columbia (Alexander
Hamilton).

After Hamilton's mom died in 1768, he moved
with a bookseller Nicholas Cruger. He read
books in his free time. "When Cruger departed
the island temporarily, he appointed Hamilton
the manager of his firm, a position that gave
the boy substantial authority over
businessmen and lawyers many years his
senior" ("Alexander Hamilton"). After Cruger
came back, Hamilton left for the new Colonies
("Alexander Hamilton").

After studying at King's Collage, Hamilton joined
the New York Militia under General George
Washington. He served as aide-de-camp with the
rank of lieutenant colonel. "Hamilton craved the
glory of the battlefield bemoaned his relegation
to a desk job. Ambitious and, to degree,
vainglorious, he constantly pushed Washington
to grant him a command" ("Alexander
Hamilton"). But General Washington disagreed.
Hence, Hamilton resigned ("Alexander
Hamilton").

"Fortunately for the New Yorker, Washington
relented and allowed him to lead an infantry
regiment attached to the Marquis de
Lafayette's force" ("Alexander Hamilton").
Hamilton commanded an attack on the British
troops successfully which made him even more
famous ("Alexander Hamilton").
