This book would not have been made possible without the steadfast support of Google. The book would have also never come about had it not been a project required in Social Studies class. Through this book, we wish to spread awareness about the Jewish faith. It is not easy to live an Orthodox Jewish lifestyle, especially when the social norms are so different where one lives. To highlight the struggle, we chose to tell a story using a relatable character. Danny Levi is a young, North American, middle-class boy trying to live life, while staying true to his faith. His grandmother, or Bubbe, a wise Jewish women helps Danny by leading by example. We hope you enjoy his journey as much as we did.
~Amitoj and Armanjot

In a town, not too far away, lives a Jewish boy named Danny Levi. Danny lives with his grandmother Adinah, whom he calls Bubbe. Bubbe's main goal is to make sure Danny grows up strong in the Jewish faith.

What's in your hand Danny? Is that what I think it is?
Ummm....bacon? What's wrong Bubbe you seem upset?
The Torah has a set of dietary rules that all Jewish people must abide by. One of the rules is no meat can be consumed from animals that do not have split hooves or chew their cud. Pigs did not meet the criteria.

You know you are forbidden from eating anything that is not kosher boy. The rules are not so difficult. Just have faith in YHWH and he will guide you and help you stay strong in your religion.
It's not fair Bubbe! Why does life have to be so hard for me! All my friends at school have burgers with cheese, and milkshakes on the side, and I can't even have bacon? Why can't I eat everything they do? I'm a kid too! Why do I have to be the odd one out?
This is not a first time occurrence. Danny is a young boy with little knowledge about the bases of his religion. He lives abiding the rules of Judaism, but doesn't know why. This does not make life easier.

I will answer your question and tell you about our past when it is time. But as of now, have done your Mincha Prayer? Go throw away that bacon, WASH UP well, and remember to pray for forgiveness if you have not already done so.
Jewish were required to preform prayers three times a day, Shachrit (the morning service), Mincha (the afternoon service), and Maariv (the evening service)from the book of Siddur. They are also expected to religiously wash their hands before every meal.

Amram! You cannot choose your daughters husband for her, she is older than 12 years old and it is illegal nowadays. If she is happy give her your blessing and consent to their marriage. If your daughter is being stubborn about this remind her of the Fifth Commandment, "Honour thy father and they mother."

Jewish people are required to get their parents consent before they get married, but cannot be forced into a marriage. A girl could have been forced into a marriage in the olden days, as long as she was under 12 years old, since she would have still been under her father's care,

Bubbe's on the phone right now, I will talk to her later.

Shalom Rabbi Yisrael, I made some wine recently, would you like to drink some.
Shalom Adinah, I would love some wine, thank you for offering. Your menorah looks beautiful. Let's discuss Danny's bar mitzvah since he is turning 13 soon.

For people of the Jewish faith, Rabbis are considered to hold lot's of power within the religion . Bubbe, has to cover her head to show that she has been married and isn't available to any other man.

We will go to the synagogue in the morning and then go to the party hall to celebrate his coming of age.

That is just wonderful! I think it is time I give Danny a serious talk.

Being a Jew has never been easy, and Danny needs to know about their difficult past. He needs to know about everything the Jewish people endured, for him to be where he is today.

Since Danny is Adinahs's grandson, she doesn't need to cover her hair. While she was with the Rabbi, she had a scarf over her hair to not be vain and to cover her beauty.
Hey Bubbe, how come the Rabbi called you by your first name, even though you're older then him?

Danny, a Rabbi is believed to be closer to G-d than I am, therefore I should respect him. Also, you start planning for your bar mitzvah.
