Thanks for teaching me how
to love people from the past.

Her name was Ruby Bridges.
She lived in Tylertown, Mississippi
on a farm with her grandparents.
Her parents told her one morning
that they were going to move to
a new place, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Her dad got a new job there.
Her mom stayed at home
watching over Ruby and her brothers
and sisters.
One day, Ruby's mom told her that
she was going to go to a new school.
Ruby was sad that she had to leave
her friends from her old school,
but she obeyed her mom.
She was soon enrolled in
William Frantz Elementary.

Ruby's first day of school was
scary.
Some men in suits came to pick
her up
in a car and take her to school.
Her mom came with her too.
Ruby did not know why she
had to go to a new school or that
people there would not be nice to
her. So she asked her mom, and
her mother told her that the
government wanted her to go to
a new school. They had made a
law
and Ruby was helping them.

When Ruby got to the school
a lot of people were there.
It was really loud and it reminded
Ruby of Mardi Gras.
The marshals told Ruby that
they would walk her into school.
When Ruby finally walked through the
front doors, she and her mom sat
in the principle's office all day.

The next day Ruby met her teacher, Mrs. Henry.
She was Mrs. Henry's only student because
the other boys and girls had been taken out
of the school by their parents. Their white parents
did not like black people so they especially
disliked Ruby.
Day by day Ruby came back to school.
She stayed with Mrs. Henry and then
was driven home by the marshals.
