Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin Aldrin 

were determined to take on the mission of landing on 

the moon and returning safely to earth.

The 3 crew members 

prepared for take off on 

July 16, 1969 at 9:32 am 

at Florida Complex, also 

known as the Apollo 11 

mission. 

After the initial launch the spacecraft was in 

lunar orbit for 76 hours, giving the crew a 

chance to take a small break. 

Apollo 11 landed on the Sea of 

Tranquility at 4:18 pm on July 

20, 1969. 

After landing on the Sea of Tranquility, 

Armstrong and Aldrin had their first meal on the 

moon, before stepping outside.

Aldrin stayed inside the spacecraft transmitting 

history in the making as Neil Armstrong was the 

first man to step on the moon at 10:56 pm EDT. 

Aldrin joined Armstrong at 11:16 pm EDT, and 

they collected rocks to bring back to Earth for 

research.
