Today is Emma's first day of third grade. 

As she's walking out the door her mom smiles, waves, and says "Have a great first day at school Emma!"

At school, Emma's teacher, Mr. Carlson introduces someone to the class

"Class, this is Avery. Avery cannot talk, but she communicates without talking through something called sign language. Does anyone know what sign language is?

Sign Language is used when someone can't speak, so they use their hands instead of their voice to communicate

Mr. Carlson has a GREAT idea

That's right Jack. Since Avery can't speak to us, we have to make sure we communicate without our voices to her.

Let's brainstorm some other ways we can use nonverbal communication to talk to Avery, any ideas?
