Deserts are defined as a location that has less than 10

inches of rain each year. Some deserts are very dry

and hot, but other deserts are actually very cold.

The Gobi Desert in Asia is cold, but
the African Sahara is very hot.

Plants in deserts have to make special adaptations, or

changes, to survive because there isn't always a lot of

fresh water available. Can you find three living and

three nonliving items in this picture?

Some plants actually grow really long roots
that help the plant get to water deep underground.

For example, the cactus has spines instead of leaves.

This keeps the plant from losing water. They also store

water inside the stem to make up for the lack of rain in

the desert. What examples of nonliving things are in
