The story is about twin brothers. Owen is the athlete
and loves to play basketball. Russell is the Mathlete
and loves education. It wasn't until a new basketball
coach starts at Beaumont Middle School that the
roles of the two brothers starts to change. This isn't
an easy change for the brothers. It causes hurt
feelings and frustrations until the boys learn to work
together and to support each other.

In the rising action the new basketball coach asks Russell to
participate in the basketball tryouts. The twins are in shock
but they come up with a plan to make sure no one looks like a
fool. What they didn't plan for was that Russell the Mathlete
ends up being an athlete and makes the team. Making the
team is hard on Russel because now he has to balance
basketball with his Masters of the Mind Club. This turns out to
be challenging especially when there is a new Masters of the
Mind teammate, Arther, who is trying to take over the
leadership of the team

The climax happen when Owen gets jealous of Russell's success and
attention with playing basketball. His jealousy gets so bad that he
sabotages Russell by throwing Russell's favorite basketball shoes away.
This was the last straw for Russell, he quits basketball and ignores Owen
for days. Owen realizes his mistake and retrieves the shoes from the
garbage and returns them to Russell. However, this isn't good enough
for Russell and he continues to ignore his brother. Eventually Russell and
Owen's mother steps in to help. She is the one who gets the boys to
listen to each other which gets them to forgive each other.

There are two main characters, Russell and Owen. Owen is the athlete and
he spends all of his extra time playing basketball. He becomes really
jealous of his brother Russell. Russell gets all the attention when he is
asked to tryout and eventually makes the basketball team. Not only does
their dad make a big deal out of Russell's success but Owen's friends start
spending time with Russell as well. Owen's jealousy makes him disrespect
everyone. For example he tries to be the hero on the basketball court by
not passing the ball which frustrates his teammates. He also tries to bring
his brother down by throwing his basketball shoes away. In the end all of
his behaviors only hurt himself. Russell on the other hand is trying to
manage being an athlete as well as a Mathlete. Being a basketball player
doesn't sit well with his Masters of the Mind team. He has to win their
respect and come up with a plan to maintain his leadership role on the
team.

The main theme of the story is that you need to respect
and support your family members and friends. You
need to resist the urge to be jealous, so that you don't
regret your actions later. This was realized by Owen
after he behaved poorly turning and after a basketball
game. He had to take heat from his brother as well as
his friends and coach. On the other hand once the
jealousy went away, he was able to gain respect from
his brother and friends.

The author uses dialogue to describe the characters
Russell and Owen. For example, the dialogue between
Russell and Owen, when Owen admits that he needs his
brother on the basketball team. It shows his remorse
and support for Russell. Another example, is when
Owen decides to go to Russell's Masters of the Mind
competition. From this conversation you understand
how happy this makes Russell. Lastly, when the boys
are in the garage after the basketball game when Owen
throws Russell's shoes away. You clearly understand
the feelings of both boys.

The author uses figurative language to describe the main
characters. Owen is described as living for the basketball
court. This example demonstrates Owen's love for the game
but clearly he doesn't just live for a basketball court. On the
other hand Russell is describe as only caring about racking up
math awards. Again, Russell takes school seriously but there
is more to Russell then just math awards. Lastly the author
talks about the chill in the air between Russell and Owen. The
chill is referring to their anger toward each other not a
physical chill between them.
