If you ever swam in the ocean, you know it is very salty.
Saltwater in our oceans is very important!
The levels of salt in our oceans control the weather and affect marine life.
Ocean saltwater is also called salinity or how much salt is in the water. It is important that ocean salinity levels remain stable.
Equilibrium is when a system is at balance. You might not see anything happening but the rate of two things is equal.
The Ocean's salinity levels is controlled by equilibrium.
Did you know there were different types of salt? When you think if salt you might think of what you sprinkle on your french fries. But there are many different types of salts. Salts that are used during the winter to melt snow faster. Even baking soda is considered a type of salt.
Salt in the ocean is a result of carbon dioxide dissolving into different charged particles some of which form salt in the ocean. Carbon Dioxide in the air dissolves in the ocean when it rains and that same carbon dioxide is filtered out of the ocean through evaporation, water runs off into rivers and streams, and it is absorbed by sea animals and more.
When the Carbon cycle is working properly the ocean salt levels reach equilibrium. This means as carbon dioxide is entering the ocean it is exiting at the same rate.
THAT IS EQUILIBRIUM!!
But what would happen if equilibrium loses balance? What if there is too much salt in the ocean?
