For 6th period biology and Mr. Pete

Mr. Pete is from Switzerland. Mr. Pete is a botanist. He is going on a trip to Georgia to see a doctor because he is ''sick.''
Mr. Pete has arrived at the airport and got on his plane. During the plane ride Mr. Pete got hungry and decided to eat an apple while he waits. This is now when the digestion process begins.

The pathway the food takes through the digestive system is Mouth, Pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and then the anus. After Mr Pete ate the apple it goes into the mouth and gets broken down by the teeth (Mechanically&Chemically)
Meanwhile Your salivary glands produce saliva to help swallow and produce an enzyme called amylase so the stomach can break down starches easier.
After being broken down from the mouth the rest of the apple goes down into pharynx which acts as a passageway for to enter the larynx and lungs and food and liquid to enter the esophagus. The pharynx is also located in the neck.
Once passed through the pharynx it goes to the esophagus which is a long tube located in the center of the chest behind the trachea, connected to the stomach.
The food has now reached the stomach. The stomach is located in your upper abdomen on the left side of your body. is a large part of protein digestion and secretes gastric digestive juices. Protein digestion is carried out by an enzyme called pepsin in the stomach chamber. Chemical digestion is facilitated by the churning action of the stomach caused by the contraction and relaxation of smooth muscles. Mechanical digestion occurs via peristaltic contractions of the smooth muscle from the fundus towards the contracted pylorus.
After the nutrients have been into the bloodstream by the small intestine the rest of the waste goes into the large intestine and it is now time for the large intestine to take action. The large intestine is located in your lower abdominal cavity from your waist down. The large intestine the water from indigestible food material and processes the waste material. The large intestine is also into three parts: cecum, colon, and rectum. The cecum joins the ileum to the colon and is the receiving pouch for the waste matter. The main functions of the colon are able to extract the water and mineral salts from undigested food, and store waste material.
The liver, gallbladder, and pancreas are all accessory organs which add secretions and enzymes that break down food into nutrients. The secretions of these three organs are regulated by hormones in response to food consumption. The liver is located in the upper right-hand portion of the abdominal cavity, beneath the diaphragm, and on top of the stomach, right kidney, and intestines. The pancreas is located across your body where your ribs meet at the bottom of your breastbone, just behind your stomach. The gallbladder is located on the right side of your abdomen, just beneath your liver. The liver plays an important part in digestion of fats and detoxifying blood. The bile that is produced by the liver breaks down the fats in the duodenum.
The liver processes the absorbed vitamins and fatty acids and synthesizes many plasma proteins. The gallbladder is a small organ that aids the liver by storing bile and concentrating bile salts. Lastly, the pancreas secretes bicarbonate that neutralizes the acidic chyme and a variety of enzymes for the digestion of protein and carbohydrates.

Finally our journey comes to an end. The excess food has now reached the rectum which is located at the end of the large intestine and is ready to be released. The apple that Mr. Pete has eaten has reached the rectum which stores feces until defecation. The feces are propelled using peristaltic movements during elimination. Once passed through the rectum the remaining waste (feces) goes into the anus. The anus is located at the end of the rectum. The anus is an opening at the far-end of the digestive tract and is the exit point for the waste material.
