A lot of famous people were born or lived in 

Alexandrov and glorified our town all over the 

world. We are proud of them. But our story is 

about the most outstanding athletes. 

Their names are: Andrei Karpov, Olga Danilova, 

Pavel Kuznetsov, Irina Davydova and Alexei 

Lovchev.

We begin our story with the name of one of the greatest 

skiers of the past - Andrei Karpov. 

He was born in Alexandrov in 1907. He was a five-fold 

champion of the USSR. 

In 1946-1961 he was the main coach of CSKA and later of 

our national team.

As a coach he took part in VII and VIII Olympics. He 

taught a lot of young skiers; and nowadays ski competitions 

in his honor are held in Moscow every year. Alas, his name 

is almost forgotten in our town but we'd like to revive the 

memory of this great sportsman.

Olga was born June 10, 1970 in Bugulma, Tatar ASSR, now 

she lives in Alexandrov.

She won eleven medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski 

Championships (four golds, four silvers, three bronzes).

Moreover, she won three medals at the 1998 Winter Olympics 

in Nagano (two golds, one silver). 

After her great career she moved to our town. Here she lives 

with her family: a husband and 2 sons. All of them are good 

at skiing. In Alexandrov Olga has a school for young skiers. 

We respect Olga! She is really great! 

Pavel was born in 1961 in Strunino (not far from Alexandrov). 

Pavel won at the 1984 Friendship Games, then he won Olympic 

gold at Seoul 1988.

He was the World Champion in 1983 and 1987, winning silver 

in 1985 and bronze in 1989, and European Champion in 1983 

and 1984.

Kuznetsov finished his sporting career after the fall of Soviet 

Union. From 1987 to 2006 Kuznetsov worked with the 

Ministry of Internal Affairs of Vladimir Oblast. He also worked 

as a weightlifting coach and served as the president of Vladimir 

Oblast Weightlifting Federation.
