Adventure











Adventure is a word that is used to describe something that is a new and exciting. Some adventures can be dangerous and have unknown risks. Explorers would go on adventures far off places in hope of finding fame, fortune or buried treasure.

Boat


A boat is a ship or vessel used for traveling people or goods from one place or another. Boats from the Age of Exploration were made out of wood, had a mast and sails. These boats were powered by wind or men rowing oars.
Did you know that there is a superstition that whistling on a ship can summon strong winds. Traditionally, the only person allowed to whistle is the ship’s cook, as it means he’s not eating the food.

Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was the first European explorer to land in the America's in 1492. He commanded 3 ships, sailed multiple voyages, and set up numerous settlements. His most famous discovery was the island of Hispaniola, or known as today as Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Discover
Discover is a term for when you find something new or hidden. Many explorers went to explore unknown territories in order to discover new land, crops, natives, and trading routes. The thought of discovering something new is what drove many people to start their own expeditions.
Did you know that Christopher Columbus thought he had discovered a new route to the Silk Road when he actually had discovered North America.

Explore




A word meaning to travel somewhere for adventure and discovery. Many people became explorers so they could sail across the seas in order to find fame and fortune! In order to explore a new territory people would bring groups of people and set up settlements and claim the land as their own.

The Fountain of Youth is a mythical fountain that is believed to have powers that would give anyone who drank this water immortality. This
fountain is believed to have been what
started Juan Ponce De Leon's voyage.
The fountain was never found, but its
stories of immortality and everlasting
youth still exist till this day.

Gold











Gold is a piece of metal that comes in many shapes and sizes. Gold can be used to make coins, necklaces, or even crowns. It is one of the most expensive metals that exists. Kings would have gold made into coins to use as money and currency for trading.

Henry the Navigator was a 15th century prince of Portugal. He was neither an explorer or a navigator but instead he funded the cost of exploration along the west coast of Africa. One of the main purposes of his expedition was not only finding a new land, but
also spreading Christianity.

Is a term for when you bring items in from one place to anothere. It mainly has to deal with trading and shipments. During the Age of Exploration many explorers would send back home new crops such as sugar cane, tobacco and other luxury items that would be imported into other countries such as England, France and Italy.

Juan Ponce De Leon




Juan was a Spanish explorer who was born in 1460. De Leon was in fact searching for the Fountain of Youth when he stumbled upon the New World and dubbed the land Florida. He also founded the oldest settlement in Puerto Rico which still exists till this day. Before starting his own expedition he sailed with Christopher Columbus during his expeditions to the New World.

King Ferdinand II





Ferdinand was born in 1452 and named the king of Sicily in 1468; at just the age of 16. Ferdinand's major accomplishment was uniting all of the spanish kingdoms into the nation Spain. He also supported and financed all of Christopher Columbus's voyages to the New World. He married Princess Isabella of Castile and was the King of Castile until her death.

Longitude & Latitude

Longitude: Distance measured in degrees east
or west from an imaginary line called the prime meridian.
Latitude: An imaginary line
that circles the Earth at particular
latitude and that is parallel
to the equator.
Together longitude and
latitude can be used to calculate
someones location on the Earth.

A map is a piece of paper that shows oceans, rivers, mountains, continents, islands and so on. Each map is special and depicts different places. Maps also helps people with directions and locations. Every map has a scale, legend, and a compass.

A native is a person who belongs to a particular place by birth. While on their voyages many explorers ran into the natives from the areas that they visited and created connections with these people so they could trade food,
tools, resources, and currency. But
when they explorers came to the New
World they brought diseases that killed thousands natives .

Ocean
The ocean is a giant body of water that covers the Earth. In it there are over a million species of plants, fish, sharks, and animals in the ocean. Together they all live happily under the sea! There are 4 major oceans which include the Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and the Pacific Ocean. The largest ocean is the Pacific Ocean which covers over 30% of the Earth's surface.
Did you know that over 71% of the Earth is covered in water?

Pinta

The Pinta was one of the 3 ships that Christopher Columbus used on his voyage to the New World. The Pinta was the fastest out of the
three ships and was used on his first
voyage to the New World during
1492. The Pinta had crosses on
each of its sails and was captained
by Martín Alonso Pinzón.


Did you know that the name of the Pinta means "to paint" which refers to the ships appearance.

Quadrant
A quadrant is a tool used by navigators used to determine someones location and the direction they were traveling towards. A person would hold this tool towards the night sky and they would use the stars to determine where they were. It was used during the mid to early 1400's
by explorers to navigate the waters.

Religion

Religion was one of the major factors
that influenced exploration because
people wanted to introduce their religion and expand it at the same time. Many explorers would even force their religion onto the natives they encountered on their voyages. Another major reasons for exploration was to escape religious persecution from their homeland.

Silk Road
The Silk Road was a trade route in Asia that consisted of materials and spices that were found nowhere else on the world. It first came to use around 300B.C. and expanded over 5,000 miles. The Silk Road was majorly used during the Age of Exploration for trading and gathering materials.
Did you know that the Silk Road was named after Chinese silk? It was the most prominent item that was traded on its route.

Trade















The term trade means the process of buying, selling, or exchanging and services. Trading was a way for people to exchange items or money for new items such as food, materials, or even labor. Trading has been around since
the beginning of time and still exists till
this day.

Unknown
The term unknown means something not known, a place or situation, or thing that is not understood. This is probably one of the most thrilling aspect that caused people to explore the unknown.One of the scariest and most exciting thing about exploring is the unknown. Explorers never knew if they might go home or even see dry land again, but the chance of fame and fortune drove them on voyages to the New World.

Vikings

Vikings were a group of any of the Scandinavian pirates and traders who raided and settled in many parts of the world during the 8th–11th centuries. The most famous viking was Lief Erikson who is considered the first European to land in North America at least 500 years before Christopher Columbus.
