LOWELL'S HALL OF FAME
(Roland Broell, Donna Huff, Gen. David Cole, Dan Gable)
The Architecture of Lowell by Jahlil Manago

Lowell Elementary School is located in Waterloo, Iowa and is located at 1628 Washington Street. It was built in 1931.
Lowell was and still is indeed a beautifully structured building. The architecture of this structure was very colorful and more unique than probably any other elementary school.

In the old kindergarten room there are paintings of fairy tales and Aesop's fables all around the walls and tiles of the fireplace.
It was most likely used when the students came in from (winter) recess. Kindergartners accumu-lated around it and read the fables.

This is the lion head fountain. It is located by the original entrance in the hallway.

These frescoes are located on the sides of the walls, above the drop ceiling, in the old kindergarten room (now the library).
(Mother Goose)

(Jack and Jill )
This is one of many nursery rhymes that are painted on tiles around the fireplace.

Ms. McDonald & Mrs.Hart by Najier Burkett
The Interventionist, Ms. McDonald and previous Vice Principal Cassandra Hart inspired me.
Ms. McDonald has been at Lowell for longer than 36 years. She told me once that "You should never give up when faced with a challenging student in your classroom. So, stand up for yourself and find a solution to problems with other students even when other kids start a kerfuffle.

Mrs. Hart was Lowell's previous Vice Principal and she worked there from 2001 to 2017.
She once told me, "If someone makes you mad don't respond with intimidation (because another student and I were having a disagreement). Instead let a teacher know. Don't let anyone bully you."
Ms. McDonald and Mrs. Hart show the true value of being a teacher because they inspired me to do the right thing. I like them and I think you will like them too.

Dennis Orvis: He was a former student at Lowell elementary in the late 1930's. He helped make this book possible because he wrote a letter to the school. He was here at Lowell since it was manufactured. He has some true stories of Lowell to tell. (Dennis is the 4th from the left in the front row.) (Written by Corbin Spooner)
Dennis Orvis

Dennis (2018)
Here is his input on the old tunnel: "I cant remember the tunnel as narrow, about 8 or 10 feet high and 8 feet across. I can't remember if Washington St. was 1 or 2 lanes but it was extremely busy." The tunnel was used for children to get safely across the busy street of Washington.

Balloon day was a special day for kids of all ages. It was a day when children would draw faces on the balloons. Students would go outside and throw the balloons in the air.

Balloon Day

So when you went outside all you would see were balloons all around. The children would be in a line or oval formation to throw the balloons. Balloon day was so entertaining that kids probably were sad to go home. (Written and illustrated by Viviana Lopez)

These are children on balloon day. They look like they are having the most fantastic time.

The Basement
The basement is a very peculiar place. This is because no one is allowed down there. While rumor goes around about that scary place, only one person knows the truth! That person is Mrs. Heinzerling (a.k.a. the Principal of 2013 to who knows how long). If you go down there you would be compelled to play a game of Hide & Seek. As you play you won’t be able to stop until the end of the day. Because of this when you come up from the enormous basement your teacher will be waiting for you at the door. So you would have to stay and relearn everything you missed that day. That is why you never go to the basement.
