Who were the mongols?

•   In 1235 Batu was elected commander in chief of western part of mongol empire
•   given responsibility for the invasion of Europe
•   After the deaths of Genghis Khans sons, he became the most respected prince
•   "Batu" or "Bat"means "firm" in the mongolian language.
