Behind the old bar, beyond the meadow,
passed the ponds and deep into the forest,
there lived a family of raccoons. Papa and
Mama, with their three baby raccoons they
were very proud and loving. Ethan was the
oldest of their cubs. He was very protective of
his baby brother and sister. Eli the middle
raccoon, was always smiling and appreciated
how his brother always took care of him. Etta
was the baby girl, but acted older so she could fit
in with her older brothers.

Every day, the whole family enjoyed their morning walk to
school. They would talk about what they were looking
forward to at school, and the things they were proud to
have accomplished. Mama and Papa would lead the way
telling adventurous and energetic stories. Ethan would
always follow behind, pulling Eli in their family wagon
because he loved the extra time with his little brother.
From a far, Helana the new hedgehog in town could see
the raccoon family walking up to the school. She was a
new student and was curious why Eli, a grown raccoon sat
in his wagon, while his baby sister had to walk ahead.

During recess, curious Helana came up to Ethan and asked
him, "why Eli rides in a wagon to school? Why does he
wear those big glasses? Why doesn't he talk?"
Ethan responded, "my brother uses his wagon to walk.
Sometimes he sits in it, and sometimes he pushes it as he
walks. He does this because he doesn't have enough
balance to stand up on his own, and his legs move a lot
slower than yours and mine do when we walk. As for the
glasses, they help him to see, just like Mr. Duck our
teacher. My brothers are bigger and stronger because he
can't see at all without them. And he does talk, he just
used his arms and his smiles to show me what he likes and
doesn't like instead of words."

That night as Ethan rest in bed he thought about his talk with
curious Helana the hedgehog. He thought about the questions she
asked and wondered what other peers might be thinking about Eli
and his wagon, or why he doesn't use his words to speak. He had
never considered Eli's abilities as a negative thing, just different
than his family members and peers.
He thought about how he answered Helana's questions and
wished he told her about all the wonderful things Eli can do for him
and his family too. He wish he told her about Eli's infectious smile,
the way Eli keeps keeps him company at the dinner table and
under the covers when they hide from the thunder storms, or how
he is always excited for an adventure hike in the forest. "Wow, I
am so lucky to have a brother like Eli," he thought. At that, Ethan
fell peacefully to sleep, thankful for his family.
